HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY LIBRARY

The Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC) includes the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System, the Bruton Memorial Library in Plant City, and the Temple Terrace Public Library in Temple Terrace.  Together, these libraries service over 1 million customers and share a common mission of promoting lifelong learning and an enhanced quality of life for all residents.  In 2014 Genesis began delivering financial education workshops to youth, adults and seniors through the Library system.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY HEAD START FINANCIAL EDUCATION INITIATIVE

Hillsborough County's Head Start and Early Head Start programs provide free early childhood development and education: medical, dental, and mental health: nutrition: parent involvement opportunities: as well as family support services specific to men, women, relationships, and expectant mothers.  Genesis financial education is offered to both the families and Head Start personnel.  3,813 families participate in the program during 2011-2012.  67% are working and 15% are in school and may also be working.  Although 86% of families feel they have made progress toward meeting their goals, and becoming self reliant, Head start was not offering financial education.  We provide this desperately needed services for these families.  Our services add an otherwise missing dimension to Head Start's current educational programs and services.

Why are bank accounts important?

Simply put: it saves money!

  • $8 billions is spent annually in fees to alternative services including payday loan fees
  • The "unbanked" pay up to 10% of their salaries for check cashing services.
  • The average charge for cashing a paycheck is $40, which can add up to more than $2,000 if done weekly
  • Over the course of a 40 year full-time career, a person could spend $40,000 in check cashing services.  Investing that money into a saving bond instead could net $200,000

Financial Education - Community Outreach

Genesis strives to teach people how to effectively manage their money through education and practical instruction.  Our community outreach consist of single session workshop or multi-session workshops delivered in a classroom setting.  Genesis also partners with other social service providers and outreach campaigns to deliver financial education workshops and increase community awareness of our services.
